The ITV chief executive has defended allowing Ed Balls to interview his wife, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, but said it won’t happen again.
Dame Carolyn McCall said the broadcaster was given “very short notice” that the senior politician would be appearing on Good Morning Britain on the day her husband sought her out about unrest across the UK.
He said the August 5 interview, which attracted thousands of complaints, was “fair and impartial” but the set-up would not be repeated.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society (RTS) conference in London, the ITV boss said: “It was a very, very difficult morning, a national emergency had almost been called and so we were notified very quickly that the Home Secretary was coming. the show.
“No one has understood the fact that Ofcom does not pursue these complaints because it believes it is fair, balanced and impartial.
“So would we do it again? No. Was it impartial, fair and balanced? And did they conduct themselves professionally? Yes.”
Ofcom decided on Tuesday it would not investigate more than 8,000 complaints about Mr Balls questioning Ms Cooper, while some complaints also relate to an exchange with Coventry South MP Zara Sultana.
