Ten years after the referendum, this appearance by John Swinney in Edinburgh was the most outspoken by any SNP leader in a decade.
The first minister recalled his fond memories of a lively 2014 independence campaign to a packed hall of a few hundred supporters. But this event was a far cry from his party’s rock star events of the past.
Mr. Swinney made an admission that would send shivers down his spine to his hard-line campaigners desperate for another vote. He said there was “no shortcut” and appeared to kick the can down the road.
It was a subdued change of position that took a few tries from the reporters in the room to pull out.
This is the same SNP leader who said during the election campaign that he believed another vote could be held within the next three to five years.
He was given multiple opportunities to recommit to his recent comments and avoided the timelines altogether.
